Coaching Tips
|
|
Our MLS Coach (Rob Kerr) has provided us with some excellent tips and drills for our
various age groups.
A BIG THANK YOU to Rob for all of his work.
Some comments on coaching from Rob.
Here are a few ideas and suggestions I would try to remember while
coaching.
First, it should always be a fun and safe environment.Try to enjoy yourself as it will rub
off on the kids.
Keep It Simple and Sincere (K I S S)
Always plan your session and keep it handy when practicing. It helps in
case you get coaches block. It happens to all of us from time to time and will save you
from a lack of ideas. When planning a session plan for double the time available so you
can move onto other things quickly and keep it interesting for the kids. As you all know
the attention span of the kids isn't very long so try to vary your practices as much as
possible.
Try to remember the play S A F E curriculum; Play
Soccer Awareness Fun Education.
When in session with the kids try to use lots of little water breaks for
them to get a drink and to give yourself time to up any other activities you are going to
conduct. Keep them SHORT as time is limited. Always praise them as much as you can and
listen to what they have to say. Take an interest in what they are doing outside of soccer
as well.
You are using Non-Directive coaching so make sure they are having fun. Remember not to
coach technique and skills or the kids will switch off. They are learning basic skills
from your games without realizing it.
The coaches qualities are also very important. MOPEC is another philosophy we use;
Magic Organization Personality
Encouragement Concern.
Finally, when parents attend either practice or games, ask them to watch
and to encourage
the kids positively and otherwise not to get involved.
The kids need ONE coach and ONE coach only to concentrate on!
Be inventive and use your imagination in your practices. |
